Dear Students:

For over 143 years, Alabama A&M University (“University”) has provided access, opportunity, and a fertile learning environment for its students. The University has and continues to be committed to you as students. At the recent Board of Trustees meeting on June 22, 2018, the trustees approved a budget to fund various capital initiatives across campus that includes the following focused on structures that directly impact you as students:

  • Thigpen Hall renovation - $3.1M

  • Normal Hills Apartments (Buildings 6 and 8) $1.27M

  • Foster Complex $682,000

  • T.M. Elmore Gymnasium $593,000

  • J.F. Drake Memorial Learning Resources Center $425,000

  • Knight Cafeteria Expansion $200,000

Also, during the 2017-2018 academic year, the University completed the following projects which again directly impacted you as students:

  • State of the art residence hall with free laundry for residents

  • New laundry facility at Normal Hills

  • Installation of new workout equipment in the Wellness Center

  • Enhancing technology infrastructure and access (ongoing)

  • Creation of a Graduate lounge in the Student Center

  • Foster Hall cafeteria dishwasher

  • Knight cafeteria new restaurant styled furniture

These projects above are just a snippet of the ongoing investments being made by the University. The majority are being funded via a combination of internal budget cuts and revenue from enrollment growth, with a remaining minority funded via an increase in mandatory tuition and fees. The increase translates to $9.60/credit hour for in-state undergraduates in fall 2018. We understand our students have a choice of which institution to attend, and these investments allow for the creation of the type of living and learning environments that our students deserve.

We are excited about the start of the upcoming fall semester on August 16, 2018, and look forward to welcoming you back to “The Hill.”
