* Alabama A&M University’s students learning experience is enhanced and graduates understand and appreciate the global environment in which all disciplines function and are therefore, market-ready;
* AAMU research and outreach programs have access to the best ideas and technologies regardless of where they are generated;
* Alabama's international competitiveness within a sustainable economic development and growth is strengthened and maintained.
The resident knowledge and expertise in various international disciplines, in science and technology in the University must then be employed for improving the lives of people in Alabama, the nation and the world.
In 2015 Alabama A&M University will be nationally and globally recognized as a leader, a major resource for and provider of scientific and professionally-based knowledge and expertise in most fields, particularly in international agricultural science and technology, because it possesses in various disciplines, globally competent faculty, students and staff who live, compete and work well in an increasingly dynamic and interdependent global community.
Some of the strategic goals that have to be achieved in order to realize the vision and fulfill the mission may include:
Provide opportunities for undergraduate, graduate and professional students to have significant international education experience.
Internationalize curriculum, research, outreach and service so that:
* In 2015 AAMU will have 20% of its internationalized curricula with 50% or more international dimensions content.
* In 2015 all AAMU graduating students would have completed a minimum of 6 hrs. of International courses with 50-100% international dimensions content, including foreign language courses.
Increase the international activities of faculty and professional staff by expanding their involvement in countries of the emerging democracies in Africa, Asia, Central and Latin America, the Caribbean and the New Independent States (NIS) of the former Soviet Union (the less traveled, resource-poor parts of the world).
This goal assures adequate scope and diversity for involvement of faculty, students and staff in significant international education and development experience.
Renew, enhance, or establish relationships or partnership programs with other U.S. and overseas institutions, the U.S. private sector, NGOs, U.S. government agencies and international development agencies, based on mutual or common interest and comparative advantage to provide wider opportunities for collaborative teaching, research, outreach and service for faculty and staff and research and training internships and learning experience for students.
This goal is of critical importance in light of the emphasis being placed by U.S. government agencies, including the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) on the need for partnerships in "Multi" terms (multi-institutional, multi-disciplinary and multi-state) for effective use of scarce resources.
Recognize and reward the international activities and accomplishments of faculty and staff through salary adjustments, promotion and tenure.
The University’s reward policy recognizes and should reward equally performance or achievement in teaching, research and outreach and service activities, as well as international related activities. Fulfilling this goal will promote the overall mission.
The risk or cost of not committing and doing these things or the lack of serious international engagement will include:
* Loss of competitiveness of Alabama’s business in the global market.
* Marginalization of AAMU’s graduates and their consequent failure in that national or global market.
* Loss of educational leadership by the University
