The Ombudsman’s office operations are consistent with the Code of Ethics and Standards
of practice of the International Ombudsman Association.
Notice to the University
The Ombudsman’s office may assist in the informal resolution of concerns
regarding a variety of issues. Talking to the Ombudsman does not constitute
notice to the University, since the purpose of the Office is to provide a
confidential forum where different options may be considered. The Ombudsman can
provide the visitor with information about how a complaint may be made to the

communications will be treated with strict confidentiality to the extent
permissible by law. The Ombudsman will not identify you or discuss your personal
concerns with anyone unless you and the Ombudsman both deem it to be appropriate.
The only exception to confidentiality to the extent permissible by law is when
an Ombudsman determines that there is risk of imminent danger. Matters
discussed with an Ombudsman are considered confidential, "off the
record," and do not constitute formal notice of any claims against the
University. The Ombudsman’s office is made available to visitors with the
express understanding that it provides them with a confidential, independent,
neutral and alternate channel of communication. Use of the Ombudsman’s office
constitutes an agreement not to engage the Ombudsman to reveal confidential
communications in formal or legal proceedings.
Independent, Fair and Impartial
AAMU Ombudsman works toward resolutions based on principles of fairness. The Ombudsman
is neither an advocate for faculty, administration, students or staff, nor
agents of the University, but is an advocate of fair processes.
