About Speech-Language Pathology: A Service Profession

Bookmark and Share

Speech-Language Pathology is a service profession; it's all about helping people -- people who have trouble communicating, people who stutter, people who have suffered a brain injury, people who have trouble hearing, people who have difficulty swallowing, people who have trouble with their voice, people who need help.

The wide varieties of disorders and treatment approaches pertinent to our field require a working knowledge of neuroanatomy, behavioral science, speech/language development, effective teaching strategies, methods for motivating people, and excellent communication skills. Therapists with a bachelor's degree can perform important duties in some settings, but a master's degree is e

ssential for achieving professional independence, and some duties demand a doctoral degree.
