Knight-Sims Brief

Bookmark and Share

The Trust for Educational Excellence at Alabama A&M University was initiated with the settlement of the 1983 case Knight-Sims v. State of Alabama.

The United States filed suit in the United States District Court for the Northern District against the State of Alabama, its Governor, the Superintendent of Education, the State Board of Education, the Alabama Commission on Higher Education, the Alabama Public School and College Authority, and ten public colleges and universities, alleging that the State operated a racially dual system of higher education and that vestiges of the dual system remain, in violation of Title VI and the Fourteenth Amendment.

The 1995 Remedial Decree specifically created an endowment program (the Trust for Educational Excellence) that would provide State funds of up to $2 million for a period of 15 years to be used for educational purposes.
