Affectionately, we call it "The Hill." Nestled in the Appalachian foothills, it offers you a breathtaking world of opportunity to gain real-world experience as you learn, to expand your personal horizons, to serve. We're a land of tradition where student life is full of the warmth and pageantry you dream that college will have. We're also a place that represents great challenge above all, academic challenge. But to be honest, nothing requires more determination than scaling our mountainous campus terrain. This is your personal invitation to discover what's so special about climbing "The Hill."
A recent graduate characterized the campus social climate this way: "I arrived there knowing positively no one. I left knowing absolutely everybody - that's how friendly the place is."
More Than 80% of AAMU Students participate in extra-curricular activities.
AAMU's state-of-the-art Telecommunications Center has expanded the traditional classroom. Multi-disciplinary distance learning classes involve video conferences, computer chat sessions, and e-mail communications with other universities.

Lucky for us, The University Players Mainstage, the performing drama organization on campus, tends to make a big production out of things. Local audiences went peanuts over ``You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown."

Challenging, yes. But climbing The Hill is not a go-it-alone proposition. Survival Skills for University Life, a required freshman course, gives you the information and structured activities we consider vital to your success.
Our search for new knowledge never ends: AAMU is conducting research in artificial intelligence, early intervention strategies in special education, genetics, human nutrition, crystal growth, rural development...
With a rolling 2,000 acre campus to roam, 5,500 students to befriend, and student events too numerous to count, you might spend your free moments enjoying a beautiful sunset, special friends, or a special dinner with filmmaker Spike Lee.
"I want to leave here feeling ready for the world, ready to work, and ready to compete with graduates from other universities." One of our freshman recently expressed those soaring expectations--a bracing reminder of the importance of our enterprise. For generations, ambitious men and women like her -- and you -- have placed their confidence in Alabama A&M to prepare them for life, And since 1875 -- when an ex-slave, Dr. William Hooper Councill, fulfilled his dream that "on this hill someday shall rise a school..." his legacy has delivered on that special challenge. The accomplishments of thousands of our graduates all over the world express an enduring truth: their confidence in AAMU was well-founded. AAMU offers an unapologetically challenging academic environment. Our commitment is to instill in our students the technical skills, knowledge, expertise, and thirst for continuous learning they must have in order to be leading citizens of the world. Alabama A&M has itself met the challenge to stay relevant and on the cutting edge by constantly re-inventing itself. Our demanding -- and extremely popular --Honors Program reflects our ongoing curriculum innovations. The University's home page on the World Wide Web and University-provided e-mail addresses for all our students -- both reflect AAMU's heavy investment in life expanding technology. Increasingly, AAMU is the school of choice for international students, and non-traditional students -- older adults whose experiences and insights enrich our academic setting. On The Hill, we strive to create the ultimate environment for excellence in education and personal growth. As your prospective classmates will attest, that often means a great deal of hard work.
We welcome students who welcome the challenge.
