In Greek mythology, Mentor was an experienced, elderly friend of Odysseus (in Roman mythology, Odysseus is Ulysses). Before Odysseus left to join the Trojan War, he asked Mentor to take charge of his son, Telemachus, and his kingdom. This is the etymology of the word "mentor" - a trusted counselor or guide.
That is the major purpose of the Changing Lanes mentoring program - to provide a trusted counselor or guide to every first-year student at Alabama A&M University. Other objectives of the program are:
- To connect new students to "Life on the Hill;"
- To help students develop social and pre-professional netowrks;
- To provide students with a person who believes in their unlimited potential;
- To keep students focused on obtaining their long-term goals;
- To increase student retention at the university; and
- To provide students with opportunities to interact with positive role models.
Whether you are a potential mentor or mentee (the student whom the mentor guides), we welcome you to the Changing Lanes website, the source of up-to-date mentoring information.
