“A Window to Know China”  Confucius Institute of Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University hold an Exhibition and Lectures about Chinese Painting and Calligraphy

On September 12, invited by the director of Confucius Institute of Alabama A&M University, Dr. Wang, , Chinese painter Xiong Daiping and calligrapher Wei Jin held their painting and calligraphy exhibition called “A Window to Know China” at Morrison Art Gallery of Alabama A&M University. The president of AAMU, Dr. Andrew Hugine, teachers and students from the area, as well as, some citizens of Huntsville attended the opening ceremony. The exhibition lasted for a week.

Mr. Xiong, also known as “CangrunZhaizhu”, is the deputy curator of the All-media Art Museum of Xinhua Daily Media Group and the director of Chinese Painting Studio. Mr. Wei, whose art name is “Jinzhi”, is a member of Nanjing Calligraphy Association, the deputy secretary general of Nanjing Youth Calligraphy Association and vice chairman of Nanjing Calligraphers Association in Xuanwu District.

Mr. Xiong and Mr. Wei specially created some traditional landscape paintings and calligraphy works for the exhibition hosted by Confucius Institute of AAMU. Their  works attempt to show the different aspects, themes and styles of Chinese painting and calligraphy art as much as possible. In Mr.Xiongs masterpieces, we can see both the majestic mountains and beautiful flowers, the description of details and artistic conception. At the same time, Mr. Wei is not only good at writing regular script in small characters, which shows the essence of traditional Chinese calligraphy, but also good at writing cursive script which shows the features of contemporary Chinese calligraphy.

In order to give more people chances to understand the unique charm of Chinese painting and calligraphy and experience the profoundness of Chinese culture, during the exhibition time, Confucius Institute of A&M University invites two artists to give some Lectures and experiencing activities about "Chinese aesthetic characteristics of Chinese painting" and "the origin and characteristics of Chinese calligraphy" at AAMUs Visual Art College, Oakwood University, Huntsville City Library, University of Alabama at Birmingham, and Columbia High School. During the lectures, the two artists talked about art which included the characteristic of Chinese painting and calligraphy, the usage of material and the style of writing with the students and the audience, and directed them how to paint and write. This activity allowed students and the locals of Huntsville to learn a lot about Chinese art while having fun.

The Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Exhibition and also the lectures called “A Window to Know China” were mainly organized by Confucius Institute of Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University with the help of Alabama A&M University and Nanjing Forestry University. The arrival of two artists opened the window of Chinese and American cultural and artistic exchanges, let people know more about Chinese art in the various activities and enhanced the influence of Confucius Institute of Alabama A&M University which makes contribution to the teaching of Chinese language.

After visiting Confucius Institute of Alabama A&M University, the two artists will continue their steps to visit Confucius Institute of Arkansas University and Minnesota University.
