A speech or language disorder might be suspected when…

A person’s speech and/or language is difficult to understand,

A person has difficulty expressing thoughts or ideas,

A child experiences academic difficulties,

A person’s speech or language is markedly different from that of others of the same age, sex, or ethnic group, and

A person is overly concerned about his or her own speech.

A hearing disorder might be suspected when…

Conversation is misunderstood,

The ability to understand conversation decreases in the presence of background noise,

Requests for people to repeat what they have said are made frequently,

Ringing or buzzing sensations are present in the ear,

Visual clues such as gestures (e.g., pointing) are needed to increase understanding,

Extra attention is given to the speaker’s face in order to better understand what is being said,

A person fails to respond appropriately to familiar sounds, and

A person’s voice is perceived as too loud, too soft, or unclear.
