Important Info About the New Webmail and Domain Account System

Introduction
The new Webmail system is just one part of the new Domain Account program. Once registered, your Domain Account username and password will not only give you access to the new and improved Webmail, it will also grant you access to your Virtual Storage Space, the Student Information System, the Application Servers, and will allow you to apply for access to the Residential Campus Network (ResNet), and even register for classes online. Faculty and Staff will also be able to use their new Domain Account to access the mainframe and place EITS work orders. In short, the new Domain Account is your passport to all of the University's many IT services. Click here to see a full list of the benefits of the new Domain Account system.

Registering Your Domain Account
Domain Accounts can be activated online. Just visit the New Account Self-Registration and Activation page, read and make sure you understand all of the EITS policies regarding use of email, computers, and other University IT resources, then check the box that says you agree to those policies and enter your student number or employee number (your SSN without dashes). Within a few minutes, your account should be set up automatically. All current students and employees should already be in the system--if your number is not in the system, contact EITS.

Current Webmail Users
If you already have a Webmail account with the old system, you will still want to activate your new Domain Account. The new Webmail system is much better able to deal with issues such as spam and viruses, has a much more user-friendly interface, can better handle the University's massive load of email traffic, and supports many new features that the old Webmail system lacks. In addition, your Domain Account is used for other IT services besides Webmail--online registration for classes for example--which your old Webmail account will not grant access to.

And finally, the old Webmail service will be phased out over the next year, and ultimately shut down in January 2005. The old Webmail system is riddled with problems mostly resulting from its aging hardware and obsolete software. Thus, ALL current Webmail users are advised go to the New Account Self-Registration and Activation page and activate their new Domain Account as soon as possible. The old Webmail system does still work for now, but will be shut down in a year's time.
