AAMU Hosts Active Shooter Training

Bookmark and Share

Officers from Jasper, Cullman and areas across the state came to AAMU for active shooter training

“Everybody has a plan for a fire, or a tornado; but when it comes to an active shooter, what’s the plan?”

Lt. Proncey Robertson, Public Information Officer for Decatur Police, says it’s a question that could save lives.

He and three other certified trainers spent Feb 21-22 at AAMU for Alabama’s Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT).

It’s the first time AAMU has hosted the training, with 23 officers coming from Tuskegee, Cullman, Montgomery and across the state.  Three members of AAMU’s Department of Public Safety also took part.

“This training is mandatory for every law enforcement officer in the state,” says Jeremy Williams, a parole officer and ALERRT instructor.  The program is designed to prepare first responders to isolate, distract and neutralize an active shooter.

Though most of the training involved classroom instruction at the ARC and Buchanan Hall, officers also trained outdoors in SWAT gear Wednesday afternoon.  To avoid alarm, the campus Bulldog Alert System notified the entire campus about the training.

Governor Robert Bentley made ALERRT training mandatory for all law enforcement officers in 2013.  The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency offers the free training to law enforcement agencies.

The training is also free to civilians, businesses and other agencies through the ‘Run, Hide, Fight’ program.  AAMU’s Department of Public Safety has officers certified to offer the free training.
