Urban Regional Extension Specialist Robert Spencer recently garnered national recognition for his volunteer work in Haiti during the past six years. Spencer was nominated by Partners of the Americas to receive the President’s Volunteer Service Award for time devoted to the organization’s Farmer-to-Farmer Program.

“It is nice to be appreciated by my friends at Partners of the Americas," commented Spencer on his latest achievement.  "This is one of the most honorable acknowledgements I have ever received.”

The President’s Volunteer Service Award is the premier volunteer awards program of its kind that acknowledges outstanding volunteer service with the hope of inspiring others to “make service a central part of their lives.”

Spencer has travelled to Haiti two or three times a year for the past six years to train and counsel small ruminant producers on how to resolve agricultural and food security issues.

The Partners of the Americas, largely funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), builds “partnerships that create opportunity, foster understanding, and solve real-life problems.”  Today, through its volunteers, the organization provides assistance in 24 Latin American, Caribbean, and African countries, including Haiti, which is still recovering from a massive earthquake that occurred on January 12, 2010.
