The forestry program at Alabama A&M University received official notification in December 2018 of its re-accreditation for another 10 years by the Society of American Foresters (SAF).

StoneWilliam-Accreditation.jpgThe approval followed a successful self-evaluation report and earlier site visit, according to Dr. William Stone, program lead and coordinator of the SAF report and response. The notification marks the the forestry program’s first reaffirmation following a full 10-year period of accreditation.

"This reflects the sustained effort of the program faculty, staff and administration to academic excellence," commented Stone, crediting in particular fellow faculty in the Forestry, Ecology and Wildlife Program. He further noted, "AAMU was the first HBCU, and still the only one, that is accredited in forestry by SAF."

Stone said the forestry program has benefited from the consistent support of the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences; the College of Agricultural, Life and Natural Sciences and the Office of Academic Affairs. The three were instrumental in ensuring the continued accreditation through 2028 and matching McIntire-Stennis funding, said Dr. Stone.

Dr. Kozma Naka, assistant director of the forestry program, noted that "Alumni and current students also played a key role during this process, as they did during our initial accreditation in 2002," stated Dr. Kozma Naka, assistant director of the forestry program. "Our supportive agency partners (e.g., USDA Forest Service and the Alabama Forestry Commission) can also be proud of what their contributions have accomplished."
