Huntsville, Ala. ---- A professional group of engineers and architects have presented an Alabama A&M University professor its highest honor.

Dr. Nesar U. Ahmed, longtime professor of civil engineering at AAMU, recently received the 2012 Achievement Award from the American Association of Ahmed2.jpg
Bangladeshi Engineers and Architects (AABEA) at the biennial convention in Phoenix, Ariz. (Photo: Ahmed, left, receiving honor).   Ahmed was nominated by the AABEA New York Chapter, and ultimately selected by the organization’s Central Executive Committee.

Dr. Ahmed’s distinguished career encompasses four years at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology and nearly 25 years at AAMU.  He earned the doctoral degree in 1989 from Vanderbilt University for his research in the field of solid mechanics on aerospace applications (structural engineering).

At AAMU, his extensive involvement in externally funded research projects has netted millions of dollars from research grants/awards, along with scholarships, from the U.S. Air Force, NASA-Alabama Space Grant Consortium, National Science Foundation, the U.S. Army and private industries.  Ahmed has published several publications in the engineering journals of America Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and others.

He is the first author of two FE (fundamental of engineering) review books, one with CD-ROM interactive exams.  In addition to teaching, Ahmed is engaged with local engineering companies performing structural engineering consulting work.  He is a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in 14 Southern states and in California.

Moreover, his family-owned and USA-based engineering company, Sami Engineering, Inc., is the pioneer and promoter of structural steel design and detailing (SSDD) industries in Bangladesh.  Over the last 15 years, during many summer semesters, he has travelled to Bangladesh, where he has educated many local engineers on the AISC Steel Construction Manual and 3-D SSDD software.

Ahmed is a lifetime member of the Bangladesh Earthquake Society (BES); a fellow member of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB); and a member of ASCE, American Institute of Steel Construction, National Society of Professional Engineers, AABEA, and American Engineering Association (AEA).  Currently, he is involved with Islam-Hakim Foundation, a charitable organization for humanity, founded by his father in Bangladesh.
