Huntsville, Ala. ---- The chief administrator of Alabama’s largest metropolitan center will speak to graduates at the fall commencement of Alabama A&M University Friday, December 14, at 9 a.m. in the T.M. Elmore Building.

Four are expected to receive doctorate degrees in food science, physics, and plant and soil science, respectively.  Some 143 candidates are slated to receive master's degrees, according to the Office of Graduate Studies, while the Registrar's office reports that nearly 300 will receive baccalaureate degrees.

William A. Bell, Sr., became the 33rd mayor of Birmingham in January 2010.  His BellSmall.jpg
stints of public service encompass terms as President Pro Tem of the Jefferson County Commission; city councilman for District 5; the first African-American President of the Birmingham City Council; as well as Interim Mayor of Birmingham in 1999.

As one of the longest-serving public officials in the City of Birmingham, Bell ably helped the Council carry out its duties more efficiently, to fund a fitness track and mini-park around Legion Field, and transform a local inner city housing development into an affordable, mixed housing community.

Moreover, Bell generated more than $197 million dollars for Birmingham schools, while the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) received more than $87 million for capital improvements.

Mayor Bell is a graduate of UAB, where he received his master's degree in psychology and guidance counseling. He also holds a Doctorate in Jurisprudence from Miles Law School.  Mayor Bell has extensive professional experience in community and economic development in both the public and private sectors.

Dr. Bell has been married for nearly 40 years to Dr. Sharon Carson Bell and has two children: a son, Judge Tony Bell, and a daughter, Jillian, who is an actor in New York.

Additionally, the AAMU ROTC program will honor eight (8) commissionees in a 3 p.m. Knight Center ceremony on Thursday, December 13.  Among the commissionees:  Bruce Cole, Zachary Folk, Kevin Long, Ty Myatt, Deniro Smith, Clinton Tuggles, Robert Ward and Patrick Williams.  Colonel Martha K. Brooks, a 1989 AAMU graduate and director of public/congressional affairs at Redstone Arsenal, is slated to deliver the address to the commissionees.
