An Alabama A&M University administrator has received a distinguished award from his alma mater during a recent ceremony.

Dr. Jeffery Burgin is the recipient of the University of Cincinnati Alumni Association's coveted Mosaic Award.  The award is presented to the alumnus BurginHeadShot.jpg
who has enhanced the University's shared community by fostering collaboration, inclusiveness, championing the underrepresented, and promoting equity and opportunity for all.

The Association accorded Burgin the honor because he "has carried and embodied the message of learning, cultural growth, and service to others" throughout his career in higher education and since his graduation from UC with a bachelor’s degree in African American studies and pre-law.  Burgin credits his time as a UC student in setting the foundation for such a career.

“UC gave me a chance, it raised me, and we are charged with being its loyal children,” he says.  He feels that his alma mater instilled in him a strong sense of responsibility to leave each community where he has lived and worked better than how he found it.

Those principles, noted the Association, have altered countless lives as throughout Burgin's positions of increasing leadership at Vanderbilt University, Ohio University, Florida State University, Washington & Lee College in Pennsylvania, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and currently as vice president for student affairs at Alabama A&M University.

A common thread during his career has been uniting diverse groups of students, encouraging and facilitating multicultural appreciation and activities, and diligently overseeing many aspects of student well being, from personal responsibility and leadership development to student health and judicial affairs.

Burgin remains actively involved at UC and serves on the UC Alumni Association’s Board of Governors.
