Alabama A&M University will observe its 139th Founder’s Day and Class Reunion Celebration May 1-4, with week-long activities honoring the legacy of founder William Hooper Councill.  The 2014 theme is: “The Legacy of William Hooper Councill: On This Hill My Legacy Fulfilled.”

 

During the week, alumni and friends of the University will return to campus for SealPMS202.png
several events including Class Reunion for all alumni who graduated in year’s ending in 4’s and 9’s, according to Sandra S. Stubbs, director of alumni affairs. 

 

Dr. Leslie Pollard, president of Oakwood University, will be Pollard2.jpgthe speaker for the invitation-only President's Founder's Community Breakfast scheduled Friday, May 2, at 7:30 a.m. in the Ernest L. Knight Reception Center.  The breakfast aims to enhance relations between the University and the large community.  During the event, the Richard D. Morrison Award will be presented to Beth B. Martin and Cathy Miller.

 

BethMartin.jpgMartin is currently Madison market president for Progress Bank and Trust, where she works to ensure that all aspects of the bank's activities obtain maximum profits in line with the best interest of shareholders, customers, employees and the community.  The Tuskegee University graduate serves on numerous nonprofit boards and was a nominee for Outstanding Professional Woman by Girl Scouts of America.

 

CathyMiller.jpgThe Morrison Award will also be presented at the Community Breakfast to Cathy Pruett Miller, community impact director for United Way of Madison County and president of TLA, Inc.  A strong literacy advocate, Miller has been affiliated with United Way since 2010, bringing with her enthusiasm and a unique ability to build networks and partnerships throughout Madison County. 

 

Later, at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the T.M. Elmore Building, Dr. Fred Daniel Primm, Jr., AAMU alumnus and superintendent of Bessemer (Ala.) City Schools, will be the Founder's Day Convocation speaker.  The activity will be followed by the traditional wreath-laying ceremony at the founder's on-campus gravesite.

Primm is a Phenix City, Ala., native who received a Bachelor of Science degree and Master of Education degree from AAMU, where he majored in political science and secondary education.  He received the Ed.D. degree in educational leadership from Nova Southeastern University (Fla.).

 

Dr. Primm’s experiences are rich and very diverse.  Since 1991, he has served in several educational capacities.  In 2000, Dr. Primm served as a school improvement specialist for the Alabama State Department of Education (Federal Programs Department). In 2005, Dr. Primm became superintendent of the Sumter County (Ala.) Schools.  In July 2011, he became the Superintendent of Bessemer City Schools.  Moreover, he serves as an executive coach to numerous professionals, and he is the chief executive officer of The Primm Consulting Associates an educational solutions and training company.

 

Dr. Primm has been an ordained minister since 1998, and he was pastor of Faith Baptist Church from 2005-11.  In October 2011, he was consecrated as a Bishop of Education and Training in the International Fellowship of Interdenominational Independent Christian Churches and Ministries.  His television broadcast can be viewed throughout the United States.  Bishop Primm started the Word of Life Community Church in Birmingham, Ala., in spring 2014.

 

The educational administrator has published research articles in various publications and is in the editing stage of his first book, 8 Essential Characteristics of Leadership.   Dr. Primm has received numerous awards and has participated on several state, regional and national committees. He also conducts seminars and workshops throughout the country and is noted for his uncanny ability to balance professional and civic responsibilities.  He is a member and leader within several religious, civic and professional organizations.

 

Dr. Primm is married to Sharon Borders Primm, a 1990 AAMU graduate. They have one daughter, Jeri Nicole. 

 

Founder's Day EVENTS are both enjoyable and numerous.  Among the planned activities are a fish fry, awards event, scholarship breakfast, class meetings, class reunion banquet, a campus tour, the Normalite Walkway Pavers Ceremony, a Founder's Day worship service and commemorative walk, and more.  For additional information or to REGISTER, contact the Office of Alumni Affairs at (256) 372-5286/5287.
