CHEERFUL GIVER:  New Normal Legacy Society inductee DeWayne O. Carter (left) presented a check for $50,000 to AAMU President Andrew Hugine, Jr., during the 143rd Founder's Day Convocation.

Following an inspiring 8 a.m. President’s Community Breakfast address presented by Dr. Jimmy E. Jackson, pastor of Whitesburg Baptist Church in Huntsville, Ala., the stage was adequately set for the 143rd Annual Founder’s Day Convocation in the T.M. Elmore Building on Friday, May 4.

Jamal Ali, an associate account director at Burrell Communications Group and 1981 AAMU graduate, painted a vivid picture of the people, places, and events that shaped his image of the University and its special place in his life.  Under his dynamic leadership in 2015, the Nu Epsilon chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., became the first affinity group in the history of the University to endow a scholarship—donating more than $130,000.

Alumnus DeWayne O. Carter, a 1996 graduate, was duly recognized as the latest and now youngest inductee into the Normal Legacy Society, which honors those individuals who have contributed a minimum of $100,000 to AAMU in their lifetime.  Following his acceptance of the coveted distinction, Carter presented AAMU President Andrew Hugine, Jr., and Archie Tucker II, vice president for marketing, communication and advancement, a check in the amount of $50,000.  “This donation is a testament to the levels of commitment and loyalty Mr. Carter has for Alabama A&M University.  Mr. Carter is the true embodiment of the University’s motto of Service is Sovereignty,” says President Andrew Hugine, Jr.

Later, Albert Benifield, Jr., president of the AAMU Alumni Association, presented Erica L. McClain the Alumna of the Year Award.  McClain is a 1991 business administration graduate who serves as a contract specialist for the U.S. Army Contracting Command at Redstone Arsenal.  She is a devoted volunteer with the Alabama A&M University National Alumni Association and the Huntsville-Madison County Alumni Chapter.
