AAMU Debate Team Hosts Mayor Battle's Visit

Bookmark and Share

Huntsville, Ala. ---- The Alabama A&M University Great Debaters held a meet and greet session with the Mayor of Huntsville, Ala., Tuesday, October 18.

The AAMU Great Debaters, advised by Dr. Susan C. Brown, hosted the visit of Mayor Tommy Battle, an exemplary debater during his collegiate experience at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.  During a more than one-hour program and Q&A segment, the mayor discussed the city's distinctions and its posture for the years ahead.

Mayor Battle told students in the Clyde Foster Auditorium of the College of Business and Public Affairs of the many pluses that make Huntsville a smart place to live, work and play--from the presence of Redstone Arsenal, its large research park, exemplary bond rating, and regional medical center to its higher education complex, arts community and public services sector.

Mayor Battle encourage AAMU students to thoroughly read about the issues and laws which impact them and the people and places around them.

The nucleus of the AAMU team has been molded by the collective visions of Adria Taylor, president, a junior English major from Detroit, Mich.; Frederick Douglass Randall II, vice president, a sophomore political science major from Montgomery, Ala.; and Aaron Walker, an executive board member from Chicago, Ill., majoring in telecommunications.

In addition to the exemplary leadership they have received from Dr. Brown, the three praise the mentoring they have received from AAMU faculty and staff.  For Taylor that mentor is Monica Clarke of TRiO/Student Support Services who, Taylor says, has been “like a second mom.”

Randall, on the other hand, boasts about Dr. Ronald Slaughter, noted AAMU political scientist, “a mover of men” whose efforts have been far-reaching, while Walker is most impressed with his telecommunications instructor Javier Thompson, who he credits for his phenomenal ability to reach students through his humor.
