Information for Mentors


Student Mentoring Requirements:

  • Commitment to participate as a mentor for at least a year;

  • Have a positive and mature attitude, respect for others and a willingness to help;

  • Have high academic and professional standards;

  • Have at least 31 hours of credit;

  • Have a G.P.A of at least 2.75;

  • Have a genuine desire to assist first-year students adjust to institutional life;

  • Understand  the Alabama A & M culture;

  • Attend one mentoring  orientation workshop each semester;

  • Interact with mentees through phone calls, emails, facebook and social and sporting events;

  • Commit to one hour per week with a mentee;

  • Participate in group discussions on mentoring, social and academic issues encountered;

  • Show a history of extracurricular activities; and

  • Complete a mentoring application by August 30, 2009.

  • Gain leadership training and skills;

  • Gain  professional development;

  • Obtain recommendations to professional schools and the workforce, and

  • Develop a broad understanding of resources on ‘The Hill’.

Faculty and professional mentor requirements:

  • Meet individually with mentee at least once per month;

  • Make at least one hour each week available for personal contact;

  • Share professional experiences with mentee;

  • Refer students to campus services when necessary;

  • Assist students with academic and professional goals;

  • Increase student’s  professional contacts;

  • Be a resource to the mentee;

  • Be open to the ideas of the millennium generation and facilitate their experiences;

  • and complete application by August 30, 2009

Benefits of being a faculty and professional mentor:

  • Satisfaction of developing a protégé;

  • Involvement in a community activity;

  • Having a better understanding of student experiences on “The Hill”;

  • Developing professional relationships with students; and

  • Introducing mentees to professional experiences (meetings conferences, research forums).
