TAN PHILOSOPHY AND MISSION
The Tutorial Assistance Network (TAN) is a division of the Office of Retention & Academic Support (ORAS). TAN’s mission is to provide Alabama A & M University students with academic support services through tutoring, and Supplemental Instruction (SI) which was implemented Fall 2008. All of TAN’s initiatives are designed to provide students with the learning assistance they need to succeed academically.
TAN coordinates and maintains a campus wide tutorial program. Its tutors serve as "learning partners" for students in need of tutorial assistance. Tutoring is available in most academic courses and offered at no additional cost to Alabama A & M University students. Individual and group tutorial sessions are provided for students interested in regular, weekly tutorial assistance. Walk-in/drop-in tutoring is available in a limited number of courses for students who may only require periodic tutorial assistance. TAN’s tutorial team now ranges from 25 to 45 tutors each semester, depending on demand and budgetary constraints. Tutoring is mainly available from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Friday. However, tutors are sometimes available on weekends. All tutorial sessions are scheduled based on tutors’ availability.
