General Information
Nontraditional students have needs that differ from traditional-age college students. For individuals constrained by time or place, Alabama A&M University is increasing students’ access to the educational environment in courses and programs through the use of information technologies.
The School of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at Alabama A&M University, through its integrated use of distance learning and information technologies has implemented nontraditional degree programs responsive in design and delivery modes to off campus students. By providing learner-centered courses and programs, nontraditional students can acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to function in the contemporary environment.

- Provides course credit for on-the-job learning related to a specific area of interest.

- Provides continuous access to lecturers and fellow classmates via electronic communication.
- Provides cutting edge distance learning approaches to teaching and learning.
- Awards up to 60 hours of non-transferable semester hours towards the bachelor’s degree to an adult who possesses a certificate or diploma from an accredited community college.
- Awards up to 12-15 hours of non-transferable semester hours to applicants for prior learning related to intended field of study for the bachelor’s degree or master’s of science degree. Some general education credits may be given based on individual assessment. *
* Each person wishing to enroll in a nontraditional degree program at Alabama A&M University (AAMU) is assessed individually. Each applicant develops a portfolio in consultation with assessment specialists at Thomas Edison State College and AAMU faculty members in the intended major area. The assessment is performed by the Office of Portfolio Assessment, Thomas Edison State College, Trenton, NJ.
Undergraduate Degree Requirements
- Applicants must be a minimum of 23 years of age and possess a high school diploma or General Education Development Certificate.
- Applicants must complete a University application form. Return the completed application form to the Office of Admissions, Alabama A&M University, Post Office Box 908, Normal, Alabama 35762.
- Enclose a $10.00 non-refundable application fee in the form of cashier’s check, traveler’s check, or money order made payable to Alabama A&M University.
- An official copy of the high school diploma or any undergraduate course transcript should be forwarded to the Office of Admissions.
- Results from one of the following tests: ACT or SAT should be sent to the Office of Admissions.
Graduate Degree Requirements
All applicants must provide:
- An official application to the office of the Dean of Graduate Studies. Mail to: School of Graduate Studies, P.O. Box 998, Normal, AL 35762.
- Two official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended.
- Official test results from Graduate Record Examination (General portion only). *
- A test score for the English Writing Proficiency requirement prior to completing twelve semester hours of graduate courses.
Minimum Admission Requirements:
- Applicants must have earned a minimum Grade Point Average of 2.50 based on a 4.0 system in major area of concentration to be eligible for regular admission or have satisfactory score of the Graduation Record Examination.
- Two letters of recommendation from persons qualified to make predictive statements regarding the applicant’s success in graduate studies.
* Test scores must be sent directly to the Office of Graduate Studies from the Educational Testing Service, Princetown, New Jersey, 08541.
