Tutoring Services
ORAS coordinates and maintains a campus wide peer tutorial program, TAN. Tutors are available in most academic courses and offered at no cost to the student. Tutors are assigned to students who sign up in the TAN office located in 103 Buchanan Hall.
The Science Mathematics Tutorial Center (SMTC) is TAN'S satellite tutorial center which offers tutoring in most science and mathematics courses. If you would like a tutor in a math or science course, come by 103 Buchanan Hall, drop in at SMTC or complete the online application. The Center is coordinated by Dr. Razi Hassan. Currently, SMTC is located in 416 Carter Hall.
Tutorial Assistance Network (TAN)
Location
Peer Tutoring is located in 103 Buchanan Hall in the Office of Retention and Academic Support.
What is Peer Tutoring?
TAN provides a one-on-one tutorial or small group program that seeks to provide tutors in all subject areas where students feel a need. Students must meet with their tutors at least twice a week for an hour in order to ensure that tutoring is not seen as a "rescue mission" approach to education.
Getting a Peer Tutor
Students must follow a mandatory application processing order to get a peer tutor. Applications may be acquired electronically but must be printed out and brought to 103 Buchanan Hall or sent to the TAN office. Tutors are assigned when the applications are received.
Courses Offered
Tutors are available for most courses offered at AAMU. If a tutor is not currently available for a course, the TAN will attempt to find one upon request.
Becoming a Peer Tutor
All tutors are required to attend the bi-weekly training sessions. Topics will be covered that will help a tutor become a more effective learning partner. TAN has begun the process to obtain CRLA (College Reading and Learning Association) certification for its tutoring program.
In addition, all tutors must attend mandatory meetings each semester. These meetings may cover a review of tutorial policy, changes in the program, confidentiality, end of year procedures, and important topics. All tutors are evaluated each semester by their tutees and given a report on these evaluations at the end of the semester.
Tutor applications and instructor reference forms, both required portions
of the tutor application process, can be acquired electronically by
following the above links. However, these forms must be printed out and
brought to 103 Buchanan Hall. Applications can also be acquired by request at the ORAS office in 105 Buchanan Hall and the SMTC in 416 Carter Hall.
You can contact TAN by calling 256-851-5497 or 256-851-5490 or by sending e-mail to ___________________________.
