Goal
The goal of the Reading Program is to provide a variety of methods and materials to develop skills in reading which may be transferred to content courses across the curriculum at Alabama A & M University.
Rationale
It is the aim of the Reading Course to develop experiences and activities through which each student will improve his/her reading skills to the limits of his/her individual capacity and potential.
Conceptual Framework
The conceptual framework for this course (1) identifies and translates desired competencies into precise behavioral objectives, (2) utilizes pre-assessment of learner knowledge and behaviors with regard to desired competencies, (3) recognizes academic, cultural, social, and other differences among students enrolled in the Developmental Reading classes.
Mission Statement
The Developmental Reading Program is designed to assist freshmen and transfer students who score below 18 on the Reading Subtest of the Enhanced ACT, to improve basic reading, study, and cognitive skills which are essential at the college level.
Students who score 11-17 on the ACT are assigned to EDU 100L, Advanced Reading, Thinking and Study Skills course. Those who score below 10 are assigned to the EDU 100 Reading course. Students for whom ACT scores are not available are required to take The Nelson Denny Reading Test. A score of 13.0 is required in order to pass this test.
Students enrolled in either EDU 100 or EDU 100L develop skill in reading through both individualized and group instruction. Students remain in the program until they achieve specified competency levels. Grades earned in these courses will be computed into the student's grade point average, but credit earned cannot be applied to a degree program.
Students enrolled in the EDU 100L level course who do not score 13.0 are required to attend Independent Study Sessions and retake the Nelson-Denny Test. Students enrolled in the EDU 100 level of the course who do not score 13.0 at the end of the semester are required to enroll in EDU 100L.
