Undergraduate Programs Mission
The secondary education curriculum provides learning experiences for prospective and in-service teachers to develop an integrated personality, a background of general cultural knowledge, and special proficiency in selected fields of subject matter. The program is organized to enable students to have frequent opportunities to observe and apply educational practices and principles in relevant school and community situations.
Careers
Students who complete teacher education programs qualify for teaching positions in secondary schools, community agencies, and private industries.

All teacher education programs are accredited by the State Department of Education, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Upon completion of a teacher education program, the students are awarded the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree. This qualifies them for an Alabama Class B secondary professional certificate, or its equivalent in other states.
Activities
|
Professors in secondary education programs use a variety of instructional technologies and teaching strategies. Students are given an opportunity to do independent study, field research projects, and tour schools and other educational agencies. Several courses include practicums that involve spending some time in secondary school classrooms as participant-observer. The major culminating activity involves twelve weeks of student teaching. |
