Undergraduate Research and Mentoring in Biological Sciences (URM)

Public Abstract
Alabama A&M University (AAMU) will mentor undergraduate students environmental biology including plant biology, environmental science food and animal science. Four cohorts of five students will be selected based on academic record and commitment to pursue graduate training and receive financial support to participate in two calendar years of intensive, independent, integrated research and mentoring. Eleven faculty members from will participate focusing on research, mentoring and cohort development activities in disciplinary specializations ranging from microbiology, microbial ecology, plant science, soil biochemistry and soil genomics, bird and bat physiological response and migration studies. Students will participate in activities with research and academic mentors and undertake independent research activities, attend seminars and participate in journal club meetings and carry out field and/or laboratory research. Students from academic programs at AAMU and junior colleges will be selected to enter the URM effort in the summer generally following their sophomore year based on established criteria and satisfactory progress.
