Kay Ivey, President of the Board of Trustees

IveyKaySmall.jpgGovernor Kay Ivey was sworn in as the 54th Governor of the State of Alabama on April 10, 2017. She is the state’s second female governor, following Lurleen Wallace, wife of former Alabama Governor George Wallace, who became Governor in 1967.  


Ivey is a state government veteran.  She ran for Governor in 2010 before switching and winning the race for Lieutenant Governor. She was re-elected in 2014. In 2002, Ivey became the first Republican elected State Treasurer since Reconstruction and was re-elected in 2006. In 1982, Ivey ran unsuccessfully for State Auditor as a Democrat before working for the state’s education commission for more than a decade.


Before entering public office, Ivey worked on her family’s cattle farm in Camden, Ala. She graduated from Auburn University in 1967 and worked as a high school teacher and bank officer after graduation. Ivey left banking to serve in the cabinet of then Governor Fob James.




Mr. Kevin Ball
Mr. Kevin Ball is currently employed as the Executive Director of Arlington Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center. Ball is an experienced healthcare professional with proven project management abilities which have supported BallKevinWeb.jpg
company growth and development.  He has worked in the healthcare industry for over 20 years. 


His civic service includes his membership within the Alabama Nursing Home Association, where he currently serves on the Executive Board and as a Regional Director. He recently has served as the Chair for both the Regional Advisory Board for the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind (AIDB) and the Alabama Board of Examiners.  


Ball is a founding member of the Western Area Economic Development Council for the City of Birmingham and is a sitting member of the University of Alabama Birmingham Healthcare Management Advisory Board. He also donates time to his community by coaching Little League football and baseball with multiple parks in the Birmingham area. He is a proud member of Omega Psi Phi fraternity. 


Ball completed his Master of Science degree from the University of North Texas in long term care administration.  His Bachelor of Science degree was obtained in business administration at Alabama A&M University.




Dr. William E. Cox

William E. Cox is the President & CEO and co-founder of Cox, Matthews & Associates, Inc., a Fairfax, VA, firm specializing in print and online  publishing, e-commerce, research, training and consulting.


Dr. Cox is also President  & CEO of Diverse: Issues In Higher Education, formerly Black Issues In Higher Education, an award-winning, national news magazine that
has been serving higher education since 1984.  The expanded focus of Diverse in 2005 has boosted readership in the business, government and public sectors. The company also published Community College Week,
a national newspaper targeting community, junior and technical college professionals, between 1989 and 2005.


WilliamCoxcroppedSmall.jpgDr. Cox has played both a leadership and contributing author role in the publication of The Unfinished Agenda monograph series, books addressing significant events in the history of the American civil rights movement.  His writings can be found in The Unfinished Agenda of Brown v. Board of Education and The Unfinished Agenda of the Selma-Montgomery Voting Rights March. Dr. Cox’s vision and dedication have also been felt in CMA’s work in using telecommunications technologies to create 41 videoconference programs, including the award winning “Beyond the Dream” series.


CMA Consulting Group, a multi-service consulting firm, was added to the corporation in 1996. This branch provides assistance to institutions, organizations, agencies and businesses interested in improving and extending the educational, career and human development experiences of their constituencies. In 1999, Dr. Cox was responsible for the creation of Black Issues Book Review, the nation’s only publication addressing books for, by and about African-Americans. This periodical, published by CMA for more than seven years, was recognized by the prestigious Library Journal as one of the “ten best new magazines of the year.”


Among his other extensive administrative and organizational experiences, Dr. Cox has developed and conducted higher education programs for the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force, including the teaching of courses in the electronic guidance systems of sophisticated missiles at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama. His corporate experience includes tenure with General Electric Corporation, where, among other assignments, he performed design work on the Apollo spacecraft ground support system.


A recognized authority on the development and delivery of adult education and counseling services to military personnel, Dr. Cox was formerly responsible for the worldwide network of U.S. Air Force counseling professionals. In that capacity, he administered worldwide counseling and testing programs and acted as liaison to the Defense Activity for Non-traditional Education Services (DANTES). He holds the National Certified Counselor credential of the National Board for Certified Counselors.


His education credentials include a doctorate in higher education administration from The George Washington University and master degrees from Ball State University. He earned his undergraduate degree from Alabama A&M University. Dr. Cox has also taken both graduate and postgraduate courses at the College of William and Mary, Harvard University and the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.


Dr. Cox has received multiple prestigious professional awards. He is the recipient of Three Halls of Fame, Including the National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame (1994); he was inducted into the International Adult & Continuing Education Hall of Fame (1999) and the Gwendolyn Brooks’ International Literary Hall of Fame for Writers of African Descent (2000). He received the Distinguished Leadership Award from the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education (NAFEO) (1999); He also received the “Alumni Leadership Award” from the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund (2000).  Dr. Cox received the “Impact Award” from The University System of the State of Georgia (2008) In 2010, Dr. Cox was recognized by Princeton University for his commitment and work in higher education.


Among his numerous professional and civic appointments, Dr. Cox is a former member of the following organizations: The  Board of Trustees of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund , the Board of Trustees of Excelsior College, the American Counseling Association Foundation Board, the Boost Alcohol Consciousness Concerning the Health of University Students (BACCHUS) Board, and Chairman of the Board of the Opportunity Funding Corporation. He is also a former member of the Advisory Boards of Millennium Bank of Reston, VA, the National Council for Education and Human Development at The George Washington University, and The University of the District of Columbia School of Business.  Dr. Cox is a founding shareholder at two banks, The Millennium Bank of Reston, VA, as well as, the MainStreet Bank of Fairfax, VA, where he serves as a director. He is a life member of both the NAACP and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and a member of the Sigma Pi Phi (Boule) Fraternity. Dr. Cox was also Chairman of the Lifelong Education Advisory Board at Harvard University.




Mr. Julian Griffith-Battle

Griffith-BattleJulian-Web2017.jpgMr. Julian Griffith-Battle, executive president of the Student Government Association at Alabama A&M University, is a native of Huntsville, Ala., and a senior accounting major.  He has been actively involved in the Honors Program, the University Echoes Student Ambassadors, the Accounting Club. 


Griffith-Battle has also served as a praise dancer at the New Life Christian Center.  Following the completion of his undergraduate studies, he plans to pursue the MBA.



Mr. John Hackett, Jr.

A native of Birmingham, Ala., Mr. John Hackett, Jr., CEO of J.H. Jr. & Associates, LLC, earned his baccalaureate degree from Alabama A&M University in building construction engineering.  He taught woodworking for the Birmingham and Vestavia school systems for approximately seven years.  He went on to receive John Hackett.JPG
certifications in park and recreation maintenance management, as well as master maintenance from North Carolina State University.  While attending the University of Alabama, he was able to complete certificates in maintenance management and master maintenance management.


Hackett’s career spans over 35 years of service to the City of Birmingham, the Housing Authority  Birmingham District (HABD), and Alabama Power Company. By holding various positions within the companies, he was able to master many skills that include, but are not limited to, planning, streamlining, organizing, maintenance, construction, purchasing inventory management, warehousing and administrative techniques.


The member of the Alpha Phi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., is a past president of the Alabama A&M University National Alumni Association.  He and his wife of nearly 45 years, the former Lila Morgan, are the proud parents of four, grandparents of seven, and great-grandparents of five.



Ms. Ginger Harper

Ginger Harper serves as Senior Vice President, Private Banking & Retail Market Manager for IBERIABANK in Huntsville, Alabama. In her role, she is responsible for lending, investment strategies, trust and financial planning for the Huntsville G_Harper-IBERIA-Small-Latest.jpg
market. With over 16 years of experience, Ginger focuses on providing comprehensive financial solutions and offers unparalleled service to high net worth clients as well as leading the Bank’s retail franchise in Huntsville.


While her primary role is leading Private & Retail Banking, she also manages events and corporate sponsorships, serves as the Community Reinvestment Act liaison and works to ensure IBERIABANK has maximum visibility and exposure in the market.


Trustee Harper graduated from Athens State University, where she obtained a B.S in Business Management. She is also a graduate of Leadership Connect Class 7, Leadership Flagship Class 25 and the 2014 Alabama Leadership Initiative; obtained her series 6 & 63 licenses; completed the Life and Health Insurance Exam; and is also certified as a Registered Para Planner.


Trustee Harper is a proven and effective leader in the community working to advance many non-profit organizations. She currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Heart of the Valley YMCA, member of the Board of Directors for HEALS Inc., member of the Board of Directors for The Arts Council Inc., and is actively involved in various other organizations.



Dr. Jeanette Jones

Dr. Jeanette Jones is a specialist in medical mycology who serves as professor of biology at Alabama A&M University.  In addition to serving as president of the JonesJeanetteTrustee.jpg
Faculty Senate, Jones is a thorough researcher, committed Educator, and a resourceful leader/mentor.   After earning the baccalaureate degree from Fort Valley State University, she furthered her education by completing the requirements for master’s and doctoral degrees at The Ohio State University in botany and medical mycology.


Throughout a phenomenal career of teaching, research and service, she immersed herself in the awareness and promotion of the field of biology/pre-med among African Americans nationally, having also served as director of the Center for Biomedical, Behavioral and Environmental Health Research.  As an educator, she diligently taught such diverse subjects as biology, mycology, medical mycology and introduction to health careers.  Her impressive career also includes service as a higher education administrator and a University trustee.


Finally, in her capacity as President of the Faculty Senate at Alabama A&M University, she demonstrates unwavering commitment to the success and professional development of the faculty, as well as serves as an integral force in the ongoing achievements of hundreds of students seeking entry into the STEM professions.

Mr. Perry Jones of Riverwoods, Ill., is an at-large member.  Jones serves as vice president, manufacturing east region, for Coca-Cola based in Atlanta, Ga.







Mr. James Montgomery

James D. Montgomery, Sr. is President/CEO of Aliza’s Cookies, Inc. Montgomery served as Systems Analyst, Management Analyst, Interim Equal Employment Opportunity Officer, General Manager, Chief Organizational Development Consultant and interim Comptroller for the Department of Army prior to retiring in 1994. He served eight years on the Anniston City Council and has been appointed to several national and international boards.  


Trustee Montgomery received his B.S. degree from Alabama A&M University and M.S. Degree from Jacksonville State University.   He is a graduate of the United States Air Force’s prestigious Military Comptroller School (Montgomery, AL) and the Army’s graduate level Organizational Effectiveness Program (Ft. Ord, CA).  He has attended Gestalt Institute located in Cleveland, OH.  He is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated.



Dr. Hattie M. Myles 

Dr. Myles serves the University of South Alabama, College of Medicine’s Student Affairs Office, as Assistant Dean for Education Enrichment. Having earned her B.A. degree from the University of Southern Mississippi in Foreign Language, her MylesHattie-Web2017.jpg
M.A. in Secondary Education from Louisiana State University, and the Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration and Student Personnel from the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) in Oxford, MS., Dr. Myles’ professional career has spanned multiple positions and institutions.  For ten years at Louisiana State University, she served in positions of Assistant Coordinator for University Relations and Community Outreach; Principal Investigator of a funded Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP) grant; and Academic Counselor and Veterinary Medicine Career Development Officer.


Prior to relocating to Mobile, AL, Dr. Myles served as Associate Director of the Office of Health Manpower Development and the Health Careers Access Program’s HCOP grant principal investigator at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.  She was also Consultant for Project “Reach to Teach” in the Durham City Public Schools. At Pembroke State University she was Project Evaluator for their Health Careers Opportunity Summer High School Youth Program.


In January 1992, Dr. Myles joined the University of South Alabama, College of Medicine as Assistant Dean.  Among her duties have been serving as the College’s Minority Outreach Officer, Principal Investigator for a Health Careers Opportunity Program grant, Co-Director of the Community Engagement Core of the Medical School’s Center of Excellence, and adjunct graduate professor in the College of Education.  She has also served as Consultant and Contractor for the local cities of Mobile and Prichard, Alabama and on many community organization boards as the Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Metropolitan YMCA, Department of Health and Human Services, and United Way.


Dr. Myles is the founder and owner of Speeches, Etc., LLC, an  elevational speaking and consulting agency where she is marketed as a Steward of Humanism, a Merchant of Hope, and a Peddler of Common Sense.


Hattie Magee Myles, Ph.D. is a native of Summit, Mississippi where she graduated valedictorian of Eva Harris High School in Brookhaven, MS.  She is the mother of two adult daughters, Sheena and Kayla, and the grandmother of a 13 year–old grandson, Si’on.



Mr. Chris Robinson

RobinsonChris-Web2017.jpgTrustee Robinson is a native of Huntsville, Alabama and holds a bachelor’s degree in mass media arts-public relations from Clark-Atlanta University, and a master’s of science degree in management from Florida Institute of Technology. He is a graduate of Leadership Huntsville Madison County Focus Class 5, Connect Class 3, Leadership Flagship Class 27. Additionally, Langevin Training Services in Ottawa, Canada certified him in training and leadership development.

Robinson's experience in human resources, public relations, strategic planning, and leadership development spans over 20 years. He has managed multiple leadership programs for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). He currently serves in a leadership role for the Department of Defense, in the area of and workforce and leader development.

Trustee Robinson's community involvement is extensive and serves on several boards.  Currently he serves on the boards of Leadership Huntsville-Madison County, Huntsville Botanical Gardens, Metropolitan Citizens Advisory Committee (Secretary), First Missionary Baptist Church Child Development Center and Academy, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Citizens Academy Alumni Association. He has led and served on boards of The ARTS Council, Huntsville Hospital Development Council, First Missionary Baptist Church Board of Trustees, and Public Relations of North Alabama.

His membership affiliations are with the Association of the United States Army (AUSA Redstone –Huntsville Chapter), Association for Strategic Planning, Society for Human Resource Management, Public Relations Council of North Alabama (PRCA), Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., and (The Boule') Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity Inc. 



Ms. Velma Tribue

Trustee Tribue heads the Velma J. Tribue State Farm Insurance Agency.  She is a graduate of both Alabama State University and The Ohio State University.


Tribue also serves on several boards such as the Dothan Chamber of Commerce Executive Board of Directors, the Wiregrass United Way Board of Directors, and the Southeast Alabama Medical Center's Women's Advisory Council.





Dr. Roderick Dewayne Watts

Dr. Roderick D. Watts is a naturopathic doctor and a 1986 graduate of Tuskegee University with degrees in biology and chemistry.  Dr. Watts is a Certified Natural Watts-Web2017.jpg
Health Professional (CNHP).  He also graduated from Trinity School of Natural Health, and the Loomis Institute of Digestive Health in Madison, Wis.  Dr. Watts has traveled extensively both domestically and internationally.


His memberships and affiliations are with The Etowah County Department Of Human Resources – Board Member, The Gadsden City Board of Education – Board Member, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity (The Boule’), Kappa Kappa Psi Honorary Band Fraternity and The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Associations.


Watts is an author, a licensed pilot, inspirational speaker, and lecturer on numerous topics, with a concentration on health and wellness.  He is married to Ms. Gloria Watts, and they have two children.



Dr. Jerome Williams

1968 and a doctorate of veterinary medicine in 1969, Dr. Jerome B. Williams moved to Chicago and worked with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.  He moved to Birmingham in 1975 and established the Red Mountain Animal Clinic, where he continues to practice today. 


He is a national news reporter for VNN, the Veterinary News Network, and holds a license to practice veterinary medicine in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois and Louisiana.
