Counseling Services


Our goal is to you help you achieve your academic goals and have a positive collegiate experience through services that meet your intellectual, emotional, cultural, and social needs. Our staff of three License Professional Counselors under the State of Alabama are able to provide services to address your mental health concerns. 


We offer brief individual counseling sessions to students of Alabama A&M University. Sessions typically range from 45-50 minutes with one of our licensed therapist to provide you with the opportunity to explore your concerns in a confidential environment. Some of these concerns may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Adjustment to the University
  • Coping with a traumatic incident
  • Alcohol and/or Drug abuse
  • Emotional Difficulties
  • Relationship conflicts/issues
  • Anxiety and Stress Management
  • Isolation and loneliness
  • Grief and/or Loss
  • Issues related lack of confidence and feelings of low self-esteem
  • Sexual assault
  • Phobias
  • Family problems
  • Significant changes in mood/Depression
  • Gender Identity Concerns

Students who present with a chronic history of instability and/or indices of intensive case and crisis management needs may not be served adequate at the HCS under current circumstance. For these students, we will be glad to assist you referral to community resources for intensive and comprehensive services. 

Group Programs

The following are brief descriptions on group programs offered by AAMU Health and Counseling Services staff:



The intent of RAPID is to provide drug education to those students who are mandated by the Judiciary Council for any drug related offenses. These offenses range from usage of illicit or illegal drugs, to being caught with these drugs in their possession. The interventions used in the course by the facilitate will teach accountability and understanding the negative impact of their personal involvement with drugs and alcohol has on every aspects of their lives.  



This program is a voluntary network of dedicated faculty, staff, and students who believe that every member of the Alabama A&M University community should have an equal opportunity to grow, learn, and work at a safe and welcoming campus. The program is designed to prove visibility and support of LGBTQIA students and employees.



This is an open group to provide education and support to the female students on the campus of Alabama A&M University. Our goal is to educate women, offer an outlet for women to discuss issues affecting their school performance & personal life, and to build emotional resources through establishing relationship with other women.


Appointment & Payment

If you feel ready to speak to a therapist, call of main office number (256) 372-5601 to schedule an appointment with a therapist. You can also walk in to your Health Center to schedule an appointment with a therapist. There is no out of pocket fees for obtaining our services. Services are paid through your Student Health Insurance Coverage via Consolidated Health Plans

Confidentiality/Privacy Issues

We are serious about keeping your mental health information confidential. Any recorded information about your treatment will not be part of your academic record. The Counseling Center complies with state and federal laws regulating confidentiality as well as professional ethical codes. We cannot be disclosed you Personal Health Information (PHI) to others without your written consent. There are some exceptions to confidentiality, typically involving imminent risk of self-harm or abuse of others. To learn more about our confidentiality policy, please contact one of our therapist. 

Crisis or Immediate Care

Our staff is able to provide crisis consultation during business hours which is aimed to provide immediate assistance for the student. However, we do provide an after hours on call services for crisis that happen after regular business hours. Click HERE for more information regarding our After-Hours services.
