The enrollment at Alabama A&M University has increased more than six percent over last fall, according to school officials, who were required to report official enrollment statistics to the Alabama Commission on Higher Education on September 8.

“I am pleased to report that the enrollment for the university increased over the previous year,” commented AAMU President Andrew Hugine, Jr.  “Kudos are extended to the staffs of the offices of Admissions and Graduate Studies, as well as to the other support areas of the university that contributed to this effort.”

The fall 2014 enrollment figures include some milestones.  For instance, overall headcount enrollment is 5,333 for fall semester 2014 compared to 5,024 for fall 2013, or an increase of 6.2 percent.   First-time freshman enrollment was 1,218 compared to 1,082 for fall 2013, an increase of 12.6 percent.  The first-time freshman enrollment is the highest in the past decade (since 2005).  First-time transfer students increased from 155 in fall 2013 to 177 in fall 2014, or by 14.2 percent.

Total graduate enrollment (i.e., master’s, Ed.S., doctoral) also trended upward with a fall 2014 enrollment of 1,123 compared to 969 for fall 2013, or a 15.9 percent increase.  The total graduate enrollment of 1,123 is the second highest over the past decade, falling just 12 students short of the fall 2005 high of 1,135.   Of the 1,218 freshman students this fall, 652 are females (53.5%) and 566 are males (46.5%).
