The First Lady of Alabama A&M University is actively involved in campus initiatives aimed at securing needed funds for scholarships and campus beautification.
Abbiegail Hugine formed the Bulldog Pride Committee to place campus beautification and aesthetics at the forefront of volunteer efforts among members of the campus community and area alumni. She also launched the First Lady’s Scholarship Initiative to raise scholarship funds for deserving students through a luncheon honoring the University’s first ladies.
A wholly separate initiative is “Legacy Lake,” designed to develop a visible and lasting tribute to the unsung heroes of Alabama A&M University, the “First
Ladies,” at the site of the natural lake (duck pond) on campus. These distinguished women include: Mrs. Maria Weeden Howard Councill, Mrs. Ida Councill Buchanan, Mrs. Anne Quick Drake, Mrs. Ethel Williams Morrison, Mrs. Beatrice Mitchell Covington, Mrs. Earlene Ovletre Henson, Mrs. Voncile Pierce Gibson and Mrs. Abbiegail Hamilton Hugine.
Individuals and organizations have an opportunity to make contributions and/or purchase stones or brick pavers, and benches to pay tribute to the former First Ladies through December 31, 2012. Bricks may be purchased for $100, $250 or $500. A commemorative bench for the lake may be purchased for $1,000.
NOTE: The funds donated by "individuals" will only go toward scholarships, not the beautification project. Other in-kind donations will be used for the beautification project.
Contributions for scholarships through both the First Lady’s Scholarship Initiative and the “Legacy Lake” project may be made payable to: AAMU Foundation, P.O. Box 1357, Normal, AL 35762. Please place either "1st Lady 's Scholarship" or "Legacy Lake Project" in the memo.
