Huntsville, Ala. ---- Nobel Laureate Walter Kohn, professor of physics, at the University of California Santa Barbara, Calif., will deliver the 15th Annual Putcha Venkateswarlu Memorial Lecture on Friday, November 2, 2012, at Alabama A&M University's Dawson Building Auditorium at 3 p.m.
Dr. Kohn was the recipient of the 1998 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, along with John Pople, "for his development of the density functional theory, which made it possible to incorporate quantum mechanical effects in the electronic density.” This computational simplification led to many insights and became an essential tool for electronic materials, atomic and molecular structure.
Dr. Kohn’s lecture is entitled “Density Functional Theory for Novices and Experts." This lecture and the following reception will be of special interest to the U. S. Army, the faculty, staff and students of AAMU and the scientific community of Huntsville including NASA, SMDC and MICOM.
