President's Message on Women's History Month

womenshistorybanner.jpg

Dear AAMU Family:

Throughout the 142-year-old history of Alabama A&M University, women, beginning with First Lady Maria Councill, have participated in every facet of this institution's development, from its early years of struggling development on unyielding Alabama soil to its current sprawl aimed at global competition.

The stories and contributions of women on "The Hill" have been captured in the significance of Legacy Lake, the naming of many of our campus buildings, and in the aspirations instilled in thousands of Normalites today and in years to come.

As we celebrate Women's History Month, we pay tribute to all the women who contribute to the success of The Hill, their communities and the nation, in their various capacities.  As we scan through the chronicles of time, we honor those brave and giving First Ladies, those committed staff members, the dedicated faculty members, and the countless alums who continue to give back.

Although there will no doubt remain many unsung champions of the HBCU cause, we have assembled a small sample to represent the women who have contributed to The Hill across so many disciplines and in so many ways.

We hope you will become inspired by this AAMU Salute to Women's History Month, and that you will share it with family, fellow Normalites and friends.  Best wishes for a productive Women's History Month.

Andrew Hugine, Jr., Ph.D.

President
