Budak and a team consisting of electrical engineers and a physicist were awarded a three-year contract for $558,524 for their proposal, “Development of Thermoelectric Power Generation and Peltier Cooling Properties of Materials for Thermoelectric Cryocooling Devices.”

Team members include Dr. Zhigang Xiao, associate professor, electrical engineering; Dr. Mohammad A. Alim, professor of electrical engineering; and Dr. R. Barry Johnson, physicist and research professor.

According to Dr. Budak, the project aims to develop improved materials for use in high-efficiency thermoelectric power generators and related cooling devices.

Thermoelectric materials represent a highly researched area because of their promising applicability in the conversion of heat to energy and as an alternative energy source.
