The summer months represent an ideal time to reflect on the past academic year, get a little rest and relaxation, a little vacation; earn some money; enhance yourself academically through attendance at summer school; and face the new academic year with optimism and renewed commitment to excellence. However you are spending the summer, we hope that it is enjoyable and beneficial, and we eagerly await your return to "The Hill."

As you are acutely aware, the economy has placed significant challenges on all universities. Funding from the state has decreased substantially. The reduction has forced institutions to critically review and assess what they are doing and how they are doing it. Alabama A&M University is no exception. To address the funding shortfall, we have instituted a number of cost-saving measures involving personnel, management, and organizational structures. Collectively, these measures have reduced our cost of operations significantly. These measures alone have been inadequate to address the total shortfall when coupled with the increased cost of operation. To continue to provide quality programs and provide for enhancements and improvements at the University, it was necessary to increase tuition and fees. At the June 17, 2011, Board of Trustees meeting, the recommended increases were approved. The new fees are attached for your information. We still offer an affordable, quality, and competitively priced education.

With the increased revenue we should be able to begin addressing many long standing issues at the university in the areas of deferred maintenance, enhanced student support services, and enhanced academic services and programming. We are working tirelessly to improve the campus and hope that you will notice some differences upon your return.

Please know that we remain committed to "students first." We will continue to work to improve all aspects of student life and academics. We ask that you join with us and the student leadership as we work to advance Alabama A&M University. Thank you for selecting A&M, and we are committed to making a "great" university "better."
