Frequently Asked Questions


1. Is attendance to  S.O.A.R. mandatory?

Yes, SOAR is required and designed especially for all undergraduate first-year students, transfer students (fewer than 30 semester credit hours), and re-admitted students (where applicable). Participation in SOAR allows students to receive priority registration for the fall semester.  In order to ensure proper facilitation of the program, students need to reserve their spots ahead of time by completing the SOAR registration form found on our website (Soar Application).

2. What are the dates of the BULLDOG S.O.A.R. sessions?
There are three sessions for students entering the university in the fall of 2017.
    Monday and Tuesday, June 26-27
    Monday and Tuesday, July  17-18
    Monday and Tuesday, August 13-14
  
Note:    Every effort is made to accommodate students for their first choice; however, the earlier sessions fill quickly.  Since space is limited, students are encouraged to reserve early.  SOAR dates fill on a first-come, first-serve basis.  The SOAR session dates you select should not be considered confirmed until you have paid the $115.00 Enrollment/S.O.A.R. fee to the Office of Business and Finance.  Remember, SOAR dates are handled on a first-come, first-served basis.    Register today!

3. What housing accommodations should students and parents expect?

SOAR requires an overnight on-campus stay for new students. Hotel reservations for  guest(s) should be made separately.  A list of near-by hotels is provided for consideration.


4. Is there a cost for S.O.A.R.?
Your paying the Enrollment/S.O.A.R Fee allows you to participate in one of three Student Orientation And Registration sessions.  This fee can be paid online. 
Note:  The enrollment fee cannot be covered by scholarships or financial aid.

5. What should I expect at the S.O.A.R. session?
S.O.A.R. is meant to make the transition from high school to college easier.  Not only will you have the opportunity to make new friends, but you will also learn about academic requirements and resources in addition to various campus activities before the fall semester even begins. 

6. Will I be advised during the S.O.A.R. session?
Yes. You will receive your class schedule during registration and have an opportunity to meet with an Academic Adviser, if necessary.

7. How should I dress for the S.O.A.R. session?
During SOAR you will be seeing all that Alabama A&M University has to offer; be prepared to walk to different places around our beautiful campus.  Wear shoes that are comfortable for walking and appropriate clothing for being outside at times.  Suggested attire for the day might be sneakers, jeans, and a short-sleeved shirt.  The average high temperature for June - August in Huntsville, AL is 90º F, and the average low is 68º F.

While participating in evening activities at the Wellness Center, students must adhere to the Center's dress code. It is available online.


8. What do I need to bring with me?
Students attending S.O.A.R. will need to prepare for an overnight, on-campus stay. Students are advised to bring bed linens or a sleeping bag. Housing is only available for SOAR participants. Be certain that you pack adequate clothing, medications, toiletries, and other necessities needed for a trip away from home. Don't forget your favorite pillow!

9. Where will I check in for Orientation?
All students will check in at the T.M. Elmore Building starting at 6:30 a.m. on day 1 of your selected S.O.A.R. session. Check-in is from 6:30-8:45 a.m. You will be greeted by a S.O.A.R. Team Member who will confirm your arrival, assist you with your SOAR schedule, and provide additional instructions.

10. Is there anything else I need to do to prepare for SOAR?
Yes, please read the Acceptance & Enrollment Guidebook before you arrive.  This guide was sent as a part of your Acceptance Package.  It is also online as an e-book.

11. How will I know that my registration form has been received and I am confirmed to attend the session requested?
You will receive an immediate response from our electronic system upon submitting your application.  You will also receive a letter confirming the same with details from the AVP of Enrollment Management & Director of Admissions, Venita ​Clisby King.


12. Will there be orientation leaders during S.O.A.R. sessions?
Yes, we call them S.O.A.R. Team Members.
