Activity #3 - Academic Advising Enhancement Services

Bookmark and Share

Abstract:  Alabama A&M University strives to provide continuous advising to all students from the tme they officially enroll until they graduate.  To do this, the university provides academic advisors in University College to prepare initial schedules for students who enter as freshmen.  Beginning in the fall semester of the 2007-2008 academic year, freshmen who have declared a major will be assigned a departmental advisor by mid-semester of their freshman year.  These assignments will be assisted by the Academic Advising Coordinators who are Title III-supported members of the dean’s staff in each school.

In addition to this task, the Coordinators will also serve as instructors in sections of Survival Skills (the freshman orientation course) that is specific for students who will pursue a major in their assigned school.  The Coordinators will also annually review the academic records of these students and inform them in writing of their progress to date and suggest corrective steps necessary (if any) to avoid probation or delays in degree completion.  The Honors Center Advising Coordinator will perform the same tasks for students who are members of that center.  In addition, this advisor will coordinate service activities and other program elements for student participation.
