Graduate (MS) Program in Biology

​The Biology MS Program currently operates a cooperative program with University of Alabama, Huntsville with the following admission requirements: 
An applicant who has received a Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university may apply for admission to the Biology Graduate Program in accordance with the admission criteria of the university. (See AAMU and UA, Huntsville admission requirements). Additional requirements for this program include:


  1. Clear evidence of scholastic competence to meet the requirements for an advanced degree.

  2. A minimum GPA of 2.50 (based on a 4.00 system) in the major area.

  3. One year of chemistry, including one term of organic chemistry and or biochemistry is required.


Applicants who do not meet these requirements may apply for conditional or provisional admission.


Master's Degree Requirements:

Students may choose a thesis (Plan I) or non-thesis option (Plan II) or Master of Education in Secondary Education, (Plan III). Students interested in Plan III are however required to consult an advisor in the College of Education.


  1. Master of Science (Thesis Option), Plan I --- The degree of Master of Science in biology will be conferred upon candidates who have met the prescribed requirements for this degree with major study in the field of biology. A candidate must submit an acceptable thesis, which shows creative thinking and independent judgment in developing a problem from primary sources. All Master of Science degree Plan I candidates must satisfactorily complete a minimum of 24 semester hours of course work and, in addition, a minimum of 6 hours of thesis.
  2. Master of Science (Non-Thesis), Plan II --- A student who elects the non-thesis degree will be required to write a Master's report. The nature of the report can be a library search, survey, or experimentation as determined by the student's advisory committee. For the Master of Science degree, a student must complete a minimum of 39 semester hours of course work, unless the student is a full-time student (full-time for three terms at UAH or two semesters at AAMU), under which circumstances the student must complete a minimum of 36 semester hours. The course work will include 9 credits of core courses and a minimum of 27credit hours of concentration and elective courses as approved by the major advisor.
  3. Master of Education in Secondary Education, Plan III* --- Option for an individual seeking to earn a Master's degree and receive Class A certification in Education.* Students interested in Plan III are required to consult an advisor in the College of Education.


The Biology Master of Science (MS) degree is a 30 or 36 semester hour program, organized into four major components:


(i) A core of required courses ...9credit hours

(ii) An area of specialization ... 15 - 18credit hours

(iii) A master's thesis (6hrs) or a terminal research report component (3hrs)

(iv) Comprehensive examination (non-thesis option) or Thesis and oral defense without the comprehensive examination.
