English and Foreign Languages

The Department of English and Foreign Languages contributes to the University’s core curriculum by helping students develop an appreciation for language and literature.  Our mission is to promote the enhancement of English as a profession and to develop students' critical reading and writing skills.  The Department provides students skills to analyze American literature and British literature in their many genres, and promotes an understanding of how language functions through the learning of multiple interpretive tools.  In our program we emphasize building students' strengths as creative critical thinkers and successful writers.

The Department offers courses leading to a bachelor’s degree in English. Also, in collaboration with the Department of Educational Leadership and Secondary Education, the Department of English and Foreign Languages offers courses leading to teaching certification in English and Languages Arts.

French and Spanish are taught as part of the University’s general education program. In these courses, we offer a wide variety of activities involving students in writing, listening and speaking in the target languages.  Students also listen and watch multimedia materials in which native speakers of the French and Spanish languages are talking in authentic contexts.
