Special Student Services

Welcome to Alabama A&M University! We are pleased that you have chosen our University to continue your educational pursuits.  In order for us to assist you with achieving academic excellence, Alabama A &M University has developed a concept for an Access to Learning Program which provides equal access to all educational programs, and ensures compliance with applicable laws, including Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the applicable titles of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990.

This site is designed to familiarize you with the services offered to individuals with disabilities who choose to attend our university.  If you have any questions concerning the information presented here, please do not hesitate to contact our office.  Although visitors are always welcome, it is recommended that you make an appointment in order to assure that you receive our undivided attention.

The AAMU Special Student Services office exists:

  • as an advocate for students with disabilities, using Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act as a guide.
  • to provide the most integrated educational setting appropriate by identifying barriers which prevent individuals from attaining equal opportunity in learning.
  • to recruit and make available academic aides, and auxiliary aids.  Academic aides can serve as readers, tutors, and interpreters for dictation and note taking purposes.  Information concerning these services is available through the office.
  • to work in conjunction with the Academic Advising and the Testing Center disclosing to them any accommodations needed for tests where students with disabilities are involved, thus allowing students an equal opportunity to reach their full potential academically while performing in the academic environment of the university.
  • to consult with the university housing office to provide the necessary information to allow students with disabilities to be afforded the opportunity to have the most appropriate campus living arrangement possible.

The Access to Learning Program is one component of the services provided through the Special Student Services Office.
