Google to O365 Migration

During the upcoming holiday break, be on the lookout for another Secret Double Octopus (SDO) invite in your personal email! Make sure to add this new invitation/account to your current SDO app on your personal device. Once you receive this new invite, you will be able to access your student Microsoft account at https://myaccount.microsoft.com by logging in with your @bulldogs.aamu.edu email address. There, you will also be able to access your licensed Microsoft apps in the web and download them for personal use! We'll officially redirect email to your Outlook mailbox beginning February 2nd. You will still maintain access to your Google student mailbox and Google Drive, but we recommend that you move anything important to your new Microsoft OneDrive storage. Alabama A&M University ITS is not responsible for data that remains in Google after we terminate our contract (Sometime in 2027). Here are some brief points about the migration:

Why AAMU Is Moving Students to Office 365

  • Better integration with faculty and staff who already use Microsoft tools
  • Seamless sharing through OneDrive (no more Google-to-Microsoft compatibility issues)
  • Students receive full A5-level access — web apps and downloadable Office software
  • Migration eliminates the need for a costly separate Google Suite contract

History of Google Suite at AAMU

  • Estimated 5–7 years of using Google Suite for student email and storage

What Students Can Expect

  • Email will switch from Gmail to Outlook on February 2
  • Students keep access to their Google Drive/Docs for over a year after go-live
  • Students should begin moving or backing up Google Drive content to OneDrive
  • Migration notification will come through a new Secret Double Octopus invite
  • Expected temporary access disruption (12–24 hours) during migration
  • After migration, students log in to Outlook using their @bulldogs.aamu.edu addresses
  • Access to full Microsoft 365 ecosystem — OneDrive, Teams, Office apps

Migration Timeline

  • Planned for Christmas / New Year’s break to minimize impact
  • ITS migration workload takes only a few hours; main delay is student Octopus setup
  • Gmail remains active until February 2, even after accounts migrate

What Students Need To Do

  • Only required action: add the new Secret Double Octopus invite to their app
  • Faculty and staff do not need to do anything

Additional Notes

  • Migration is designed to be as smooth and student-friendly as possible
  • Goal is improved collaboration, consistency, and simpler technology for all students
