Student Government Association

The Student Government Association is the official representative of all undergraduate students attending Alabama Agricultural & Mechanical University. The purpose of the Student Government Association is to stimulate and develop democracy amongst students, as well as provide a path of communication to promote student interest.

The SGA represents the Student Body to:

  • Alumni
  • Faculty
  • Staff
  • Administration

Goals & Responsibilities

AAMU provides a variety of opportunities for students to gain experience in self-government. The SGA is the overall student governing body and is responsible for many of the activities and programs designed and executed by students for students.

To ensure our purpose, the SGA takes on the following responsibilities:

  • Empower individuals to serve and to inspire others for the betterment of the community.
  • Create a welcoming environment that celebrates individual differences within a context mutual respect.
  • Challenge individuals to uphold shared expectations and recognize how their decisions impact others.

Mr. Japhe Jelks is a senior Biology major, from Chicago, Illinois. He is a member of the university Echo Student Ambassadors, Common Ground, the Student Health Alliance, and a former member of the University’s Honors Program. Japhe is also a proud member of the Gamma Phi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated, and of Sigma Pi Alpha, National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS). He has been a Freshman President’s award, President’s Silver Medallion twice, and on the deans list and honor roll for the last three years,

Upon graduation, Japhe plans to earn an M.D. or D.O. degree and become a certified OB/GYN and to create a youth organization dedicated to young black men who aspire to work in the medical field.
