Professor Brandan Wheeler featured on WalletHub

Dr. Brandan E. Wheeler, HDF Program Coordinator and Assistant Professor in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences was featured on WalletHub where he shared his knowledge on whether is fair or not for car insurance companies to consider gender, age or driver's occupation when setting premiums, and if the car insurance companies are fair to college students.

You can find Dr. Wheeler's answer below:

  • Is it fair for car insurance companies to consider gender or age when setting premiums?
  • Is it fair for car insurance companies to consider a driver’s occupation when setting premiums?
  • Do you think car insurance companies are fair to college students?

Age, gender, and occupation are related to risk. In general, males tend to take greater risks than females, which also affects their driving. As adults age, their reaction times slow, which may create additional driving risks.
Some occupations may be riskier, like those where you need to drive during the night, or the ones where you drive long distances.

Insurance companies take all these factors into account and calculate risk using actuarial tables.
