Professor Mahuja Taznin featured on WalletHub

Dr. Mahjuja Taznin, Assistant Professor of Economics and Finance was featured on WalletHub where she shared her knowledge on whether is fair or not for car insurance companies to consider gender, age or a driver's occupation when setting premiums, and if the car insurance companies are fair to college students.

You can find Dr. Taznin's answer below:

  • Is it fair for car insurance companies to consider gender or age when setting premiums
  • Is it fair for car insurance companies to consider a driver’s occupation when setting premiums?
  • Do you think car insurance companies are fair to college students? For all three of these questions, the first thing to consider is, gender, age, occupation, and status as a college student are all used by insurance companies as proxies for a driver's risk level. If insurance companies find these to be accurate indicators of driving risk, then yes, it is fair. However, as information becomes easier to collect, such as adopting risk-reducing measures (proven driving record) or risk-monitoring measures (apps monitoring driving), these proxies become less accurate in comparison, and it is then possible to have more accurate values for risk premium. The article can be found here: https://wallethub.com/cheap-car-insurance/alabama#experts=Mahjuja_Taznin
