Submissions
Submissions for the AAMU Literary Journal will be accepted from September 15-December 15. Please read the guidelines carefully, and then use the submission link at the bottom of this page to submit.
General Guidelines
- Entrants must be current HBCU students, either partor full-time. Both undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to enter.
- Do not include any identifying information in your submission, including the file name.
- Simultaneous submissions are fine; just let us know immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere by emailing pamela.manasco@aamu.edu to withdraw all or part of your submission.
- Submissions may not have been previously published. We consider work posted online, including work shared on social media accounts, to be published. If you've performed the work at an in-person event, it's okay to submit as long as the work doesn't appear online.
- We will not consider any work containing erotic/sexual content, graphic violence, profanity, racial slurs, or other offensive language.
- We will not consider any work that has been generated by artificial intelligence/large language models, such as ChatGPT.
- Submissions will be disqualified if an entrant is not an HBCU student, if the work is longer than the genre requirements specify, if the work contains prohibited content as outlined above, if the entrant commits plagiarism, or if the entrant includes identifying information in their submission.
Genre Requirements
Poetry
- Submit 1-3 poems in a single file .doc or .docx preferred.
- There is no line limit for poetry, but preference is given for works under 1 single-spaced page.
Fiction
- Submit 1 story of up to 5,000 words in a single file .doc or .docx preferred.
Nonfiction
- Submit 1 essay of up to 5,000 words in a single file .doc or .docx preferred.
Plays
- Submit 1 one-act play of up to 10 pages in a single file .doc or .docx preferred.
Artwork
- Submit 1-3 pieces of artwork; multiple files may be uploaded .png or .jpeg preferred.
This submission form has a 10MB maximum file size. If your file is larger than 10MB, please email pamela.manasco@aamu.edu in order to set up an alternate submission.
