Co-ed Residence Hall

William H. Councill Hall is a three-story co-ed dormitory named in honor of the founder and first President of Alabama A&M University, William Hooper Councill. Councill served Alabama A&M University from 1875- 1909.

William H. Councill Hall will be home to nearly 100 upperclassmen students and offers double occupancy and a few single rooms. The facility offers a community lounge, recreational room, community bathrooms with individual shower stalls, and later in the year will offer free laundry facilities.

History

Councill Hall was erected in 1929 at a cost of $80,000.  In 1975 the replacement value was $900,000 for the building and $60,000 for the contents, totaling $960,000.  Dedicated in 1930, Councill Hall contained 50 bedrooms, two private suites for matrons, one hospital unit, and one large social room.  The building was supplied with hot and cold water. Other modern conveniences included a freight elevator and a laundry room on each of the three floors. The university laundry was housed in the basement.

Councill Hall was converted from a student residence hall to a student support center in 2016.  Under the administration of the eleventh president, Dr. Andrew Hugine, Jr., Councill Hall re-opened after extensive renovations and upgrades including state-of-the-art technology of more than $1,000,000.  As the student support center, Councill Hall served as the home for Freshman Academy, the Office of Retention and Persistence, TRiO, the Confucius Institute, and the Tutorial Assistance Network (TAN).

Councill Hall was re-converted into a student residence hall in the Summer of 2022. The residence will have a common area and kitchenette for students to use which is located on the first floor.
