Co-operative and Internships | Common Questions
- Will the co-op/intern receive academic credit?
Students will receive course credit if they register for a co-op/internship class. Others will choose to intern simply for the invaluable experience.
Back to Top - What is expected of supervisors once a student is hired?
Provide a clear job description and meaningful opportunities for experience related to the students’ major. Orient the co-op/intern to your organization and provide consistent supervision and feedback. Assist the student in developing and completing learning objectives for the experience. Contact the CDS Center if any concerns arise.

Unpaid Internship Guidelines
If the internship is unpaid, the employer must confirm that their position meets the primary beneficiary test outlined by the Department of Labor.
Student interns should not be expected to go “out of pocket” for business-related expenses. This includes training, travel expenses while working (e.g., gas for site visits, client meetings). If the student does go “out of pocket” for these types of expenses, it is expected that the employer will reimburse them in a timely fashion.
