The PATH TO BECOMING a SOCIAL WORKER

In order to become a social worker, you must earn a bachelor's degree from a CSWE-accredited program. The Bachelor of Arts in Social Work is the entry-level credential of professional social workers. The M.S.W. (Master of Social Work) is a graduate degree that reflects the acquisition of advanced social work competencies. The M.S.W. is a versatile degree; those with an M.S.W. may engage in direct practice in various settings, teach, or serve as consultants and evaluators. Licensed Independent Clinical Social Workers (LICSW) may practice independently.

The AAMU Department of Social Work, Psychology, and Counseling offers both the B.S.W. and M.S.W. degrees. The two programs are fully accredited and are among the top social work programs in the state.
