AAMU Assistant Professor Delivers International TEDx Talk in Cape Town

Dr. Katina Lang-Lindsey, LMSW and AAMU Assistant Professor of Social Work took to the
TEDx stage on August 30 in Cape Town at the University of South Africa to discuss “The Power of Persistence.”

“When Nelson Mandela said ‘The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall,’ he was speaking about the power of persistence," says Lang-Lindsey. "I shared stories about people who live with chronic conditions who get up day after day and fight all over again. Like Mandela, they are true testaments to the power of persistance."

With a decade of experience in social work, Lang-Lindsey has dedicated her career to patient advocacy and addressing health disparities, particularly in chronic illness. Her journey began as a nephrology social worker at a dialysis clinic, where she worked closely with peer educators on a research project. This experience sparked her interest in behavioral health, health disparities, and patient health outcomes.

“It’s important for me to share these narratives, where we find the tapestry of human resilience woven with threads of hope, courage and the unwavering spirit to overcome,” adds Lang-Lindsey.

Her passion for making a difference led Lang-Lindsey to author multiple academic grants, securing millions of dollars to combat marginalization in both rural and urban areas across Alabama. In addition to her academic pursuits, she is an accomplished author. Her latest book, “Creating Advice for the Soul,” offers guidance for making personal and impactful decisions and will be published next year.

“Over 500 people turned out to hear me speak in Cape Town. I was thrilled to be able to share what I’ve learned through my work experience and to represent Alabama A&M University on such a large stage.”
