The Alabama A&M University Small Farms Research Center, the Alabama Cooperative Extension System and Alchemy Farms are holding two workshops focusing on small flock management and poultry processing.
A Virtual Small Flock Management Workshop is scheduled for Thursday, November 19, from 6:30-8 p.m. for farmers, landowners, Extension agents and any other interested parties. Register at https://www.aces.edu/go/IntroPP. This workshop is required before attending the in-person workshop set for November 21.
The three-hour Hands-On Small Flock Processing Workshop on November 21 will be held at Alchemy Farms in Gurley, Ala., from 9 a.m.-12 noon. This workshop is limited to 10 spots and attendance at the previous November 19 workshop is mandatory. The second workshop requires a $20 per person fee and includes take-home broilers. The November 21 workshop will feature a short farm tour, notes on food safety and information on poultry processing. Participants in Part II are encouraged to dress appropriately for outdoor weather and to process broilers, to wear masks, to wear shoes for field work, and to bring a small ice-filled cooler to take home two small broilers.
