AAMU Interim Chief Named
Payton Started with Decatur PD
Captain Montrez Payton will serve as the interim executive director and chief of public safety and emergency preparedness in Alabama A&M University’s Department of Public Safety. Payton has nine years of law enforcement experience, beginning with the Decatur Police Department. He later transferred to AAMU.
In 2017, he became lieutenant/investigator and was promoted to captain in 2021. His current post became effective January 6, according to Dr. Brittany A. Holloman, interim associate vice president, Student Affairs and Judicial Appeals.
Payton is married to Keisha Payton and has two children, Madison and Braylon.
Dr. Holloman also thanked Dana Gillis, previous interim executive director and chief of public safety and emergency preparedness, for his service to the University.
